Writing in the Sanctuary – 2 part workshop

November 24, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Learn the art of place-based writing with internationally produced playwright and writer – Emma Gibson.

Immerse yourself in the wonders of Mulligans Flat, then put pen to paper to express your experience.

The workshop will be staged over two sessions in the Sanctuary – a daytime walking-writing experience (approx. 4 hours), and a night time experience (approx 3 hours).

Emma Gibson and Indigenous Ecologists – Kristi Lee and Dhani Gilbert – will take you venturing into the Sanctuary – shining light on the wildlife, ecology and cultural history of the landscape.

Combine art and science with exercises and discussion of language, poetry, written mapping, sensory engagement and bush symbolism.

Draw inspiration from the beauty of Mulligans Flat and its unique wildlife – bettongs, quolls, curlews and an array of protected biodiversity will be there to greet you along the way!

PART 1. Saturday, 24th November, 9am – 1pm

PART 2. Wednesday, 28th, 7:30 – 10:30pm

The workshop will include exercises in writing poetry, script and prose, taking inspiration from the landscape. Expect to walk around 5 kilometres (with breaks) on Saturday.

  • Please bring: sturdy shoes, hat and sunscreen, water, notebook and pen.
  • Basic snacks will be provided on the Saturday workshop. Participants are also free to bring their own.

All experience levels are welcome – from beginners to practicing writers. Age limit is 12 and over.

If you can only attend one part of the workshop, or would like to discuss access requirements, please contact Millie Sutherland Saines at education@woodlandsandwetlands.org.au or 0426 374 821 to organise.

About the Writer

Emma Gibson writes about place, real and imagined. She also writes plays and writes about plays as a theatre critic.

Her work has been performed across Australia and in England, Sweden and the USA. Most recently, War Stories, co-written with Rob Johnston, was produced at the 2016 Greater Manchester Fringe Festival and the Buxton Festival Fringe. Emma’s other plays include Bloodletting (2015), Johnny Castellano is MINE (2014, Canberra Critics Circle Award), The Pyjama Girl (2013), Dead Beauty Queens (2013) Widowbird (2012) and Love Cupboard (2010).

Potential development into a poetry trail – we would love to record work produced in this workshop for a walking experience that will be integrated into our place-based app. This way, your pieces can be published and listened to in-situ my hundreds of visitors! Of course, this option is not obligatory – and will be up to the participant. Emma will discuss in further detail during the workshop.
