National Science Week Walk 13 August

August 13, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Come celebrate National Science Week with us!

What to bring/wear

  • sturdy shoes
  • rain protection
  • warm clothing
  • A basic torch for finding your car and the end of the walk (please leave your spotlights at home as your guide has a specialized torch for viewing the animals)
  • light refreshments (including water)

Don’t forget to bring your sharp senses; as a group we will need to look and listen very carefully to hear and see the animals that may be feeding quietly only meters away.

Details about the walk

A night tour at Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary is a unique experience to step back in time and experience the Australian bush as it was 100 years ago. At night things really come to life in the Sanctuary. Nocturnal animals awaken hungry and looking for food.

Our Ecologist will take you deep into the Sanctuary, inside the predator-proof fence, where native animals are thriving in the absence of foxes and feral cats. You’ll be lucky enough to hear from our ecologists present their research or work within he sanctuary and hear whats new in research news straight from the horses mouth!

On the tour you might be lucky enough to witness the Eastern Bettong foraging on native truffles in the wild (this species has been extinct from the Australian mainland for almost 100 years). Or see a tiny sugar glider eating nectar from the top of a flowering eucalyptus tree. You can observe various kangaroo and wallaby species feeding in their natural environment. Possums are often spotted slowly walking along the ground from tree to tree, as they have adapted to their predator free environment.

Get inspired by learning how science is enhancing our understanding and ability to restore these critically endangered woodlands.

  • we will be walking just under 4 km
  • there are no toilets at the meeting point
  • the walk will take from 2 to 2.5 hours
